Building the Past — Sant Andreu, Barcelona
Sant Andreu carries its history in its walls. The old Mercedes factory, the remnants of an industrial neighbourhood, the traces of lives already lived — this project does not erase them. We know it is impossible to build a medieval town.
The conditions that created those places — the slow accumulation of time, the necessity, the unplanned growth over centuries — cannot be replicated by design. And yet, the desire to live within that kind of density, that human scale, that sense of a place with memory, is real. So this project takes what remains and builds forward from there.
Where new life is needed, new materials appear — expressed as purple, a clear and honest signal of what belongs to the future. This is not restoration, and it is not demolition — it is a neighbourhood that accepts the impossibility of returning to the past, and builds anyway.
